At 63 years old, my wife and I decided to take the plunge and create our “family compound” at Brays Island to foster family memories for generations. I researched many “low country” architects and Allison Ramsey caught my attention. They have published many of their floorplans in a series of high-quality books, so I purchased several and was exposed to a vast array of floorplans and accompanying relevant architecture. We found one floorplan that was almost ideal, so we used it as a base for ours. What was shocking was that all I had to do was pay a very reasonable fee to use the original plan plus any time for modifications. Bill Harris, our primary contact, walked us through the design process effortlessly and navigated a fairly rigorous, 5-step architectural review with Brays, of which he was intimately familiar. Coincidentally, we have good friends from Orlando who are also building at Brays yet, although I am sure they have also designed a beautiful home, paid multiples what we did for our plans. We are ecstatic with our end product and to do it over again, we wouldn’t change a thing. And as a bonus, Bill introduced us to an up-and-coming builder who we are equally thrilled with. Allison Ramsey knocked it out of the park.

Bill Harris and his associates are well versed in traditional low country layouts and details along with other architectural styles. They listen to all of your wants and needs and synergize them with architecturally correct applications. Moreover, we had a difficult lot configuration, but Bill worked tirelessly to fit our home on the lot and maintain curb appeal. Moreover, they put together a team of professionals in the landscaping and structural engineering disciplines for a one stop seamless experience. Although this is our personal residence, as a custom builder for over 35 years, working with other architects in the northern U.S., you will not have a better group of professionals to work with.
Cooter and Robby just finished wrapping up plans for our future southern home, and we could not have had a better experience. We tweaked one of their plans a little bit, and their collaboration, design sense, attention to detail, and even their house placement on the lot was / will be perfect. As we went through the process, they kept fine tuning the subtle things also along the way, and they always went the extra mile for us. A fun and easy experience!

ARA is a strong, professional, architectural group that cares about producing beautiful, high quality work. They were easy to work with, I wish we could have had face to face meetings as this was our first true home build. Every part of their team seemed to work as a family and took great care of us, even when revisions needed to be made. Our home is currently under construction so the grand reveal is yet to come. ARA gets my stamp of approval!

Allison Ramsey Architects gives a lot of options and follows requests for any revisions by listening to your specific needs. The best thing about my design is its 20th Century character that brings back historical turn of the Century looks but with all of the attention needed to modern conveniences and design elements. With a few revisions to the original design, I received a custom product at half the price which is elegant and not at all “cookie cutter” in aesthetic.
